Is atheism a new fundamentalism born from social and cultural forces much like the Christian fundamentalism movement of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s? One could argue the point I suppose. At the very least, there are clear fundamentalist strains within what has been called the new atheism. Christian ‘fundamentalism’ comes from a series of pamphlets called ‘The Fundamentals’ that were published by American evangelicals during the 1910s and insisted on Christians believing certain things like Bible to be taken literally. Today, some atheists assert fundamentals that they say any rational, enlightened, educated, human being should believe – such as the rejection of the supernatural, science as the only grounds for knowledge, the indisputable truth of Darwinism and so forth.The central question is - Are these fundamentalist atheistic ideals appealing to more people in the modern era than Christian fundamentalist ideals, and if so, is that appeal fueling conversion to atheism? The answer to these questions may very well be yes.
