Pakistan’s government asserted today that Al-Qaeda was behind the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, offering a transcript from a phone tap as demonstrative proof. In the background, the rioting continues as hundreds of thousands mobbed her funeral - most vowing revenge. The Pakistan army has been generally ineffective in their efforts to quell rioting across the nation. Musharraf’s government also issues a statement saying that Bhutto was not killed by gunshots or shrapnel as originally claimed, but instead by the force of a suicide bomb blast that slammed her against a lever in her car’s sunroof, that ultimately shattered her skull. As you recall, her enemies used such tactics almost the moment her plane touched down in Pakistan only weeks ago…and she was a target ever since.
Previous attempts on Bhutto’s life were largely ignored by the Bush administration…until Bhutto was actually killed. Only then did the floodgate of criticism open. Until Bhutto was murdered, the Bush administration courted Musharraf as an essential ally and placed him upon a pedestal international importance.
Now what do we have?
